HTML5 Multi-Platform Video Preview
Posted on 05. Jun, 2010 by gernotk in Video, What's New
With so much talk about HTML5 and the war between Apple & Adobe raging on, we decided to test ourselves if HTML5 is ready for prime time, yet. What we discovered is that there are still many discrepancies between browsers regarding what video file formats they support and how the playback looks. H264, which is supported by Chrome and Safari (and will also be supported by Internet Explorer 9) seems to deliver the biggest bang for the buck.
Two of its main advantages over ogv video files are video playback hardware acceleration and a proven high-quality video compression. Don’t take our word for it. See it for yourself by watching our 3D demo reel in HTML5 below.
Note: This page is optimized to play video on all mobile devices (iPhone, Android, iPads, etc.) and in the most compatible HTML5 standard. HTML5 video playback is only support if you use of the latest browser versions from Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer 9 beta and Opera. If you are using a browser that doesn’t support HTML5, yet, this page currently forces a third party flash video player.

I noticed it starts IMMEDIATELY, and doesn’t stutter at the beginning like most .flv files do.
And that’s good!

yeah, that’s what we like about HTML5, too. If you have a Mac running Safari 4 or later the quality is exceptional on the video. Did you try the iPad version, too?

Not yet! I have an iPhone and a PowerBook - no need for the iPad yet.
I find I have to add a second or two of BLANK at the beginning of .flv files - give it a chance to start downloading smoothly. Don’t put anything right at the beginning.
If we can arrive at ONE technology and stick with it, that’s fine with me. And preferable a technology that doesn’t require a plug-in or an upgrade every six months.
If web-based Silverlight uses Javascript and HTML (basically) why does it need a plug-in, as well?
I see sites now that LOOK like Flash, but they’re not. It’s all done with scripting and it’s amazing.
